Student Exchange Programs

An exchange organization handles all of the practical details of your year. It matches you up with a host family, helps you get your visa and insurance, and most of the time arranges your travel.

Exchange student organization

When you apply with an organization, you will be asked to fill out a lot of different forms. You will also attend an interview with a representative from that organization. One question to expect, ‘Why do you want to become an exchange student?”

A potential host family will see the general information you have given about yourself – your age, interests, family members, etc. They will also read a letter that you have written. This is what they judge you on and it’s important to tell the truth and to present yourself as honestly as possible! It can lead to big problems later if your host family discovers you have lied on your application!

Student Application

Most organizations are similar. They may choose to market themselves (and you!) differently, but essentially they all offer the same services. You should research what the different organizations have to offer and how much they cost. Some place you with just one family and others with several families. Some also offer voluntary preparation camps. These can be both fun and educational and a good transition period before arriving in your new town and meeting your host family.

voluntary preparation camps? what r they? are they available in india?

2 Oscar Carlsson on Nov 20th, 2009 said:

Regrettably I don’t have any information specific about India. But when you go to USA it is very common for an Exchange Program to have a “preperation camp”. It’s usually from 2 days to one week and it is all about getting comfortable. It’s SUPER fun and you meet so many students that are in the same situation as you. The camp make you ready to what expect from your year as an exchange student. I loved my camp!

Hey Shagun!

If you apply for an exchange from rotary, im sure your Rotary club would have a small orientation to prepare you for the BIG year!
I went to Brazil on an exchange, last year, and UNDOUBTEDLY, i had the best year. Well, dont mean to scare you, but i also had some very tough times! Its upto you to decide how the year was, it just makes you more positive.
Good Luck if you wish to go on an exchange!

I don’t think so. But if your lucky maybe you can be in the same city/two cities close to each other. Check with the organizations.

20 Mikayla on Jan 17th, 2011 said:

hey rizza,
just go onto google, and search “student exchange” then it should come up with some organisations, then if you go onto their websites you can get information packs sent to you and you could also email someone who works there and ask them questions. they should know most of the answers. im not sure if she is allowed to go at the age of 14, i think its 15 but dont hold me to that because all organisations are different (:

And what are some ideas I can think of when they present the question “Why do you want to become a foreign exchange student” to me?

30 Rae on Jun 10th, 2011 said:

Anjana you’ll probably have to wait a while because most programs don’t take students under the age of 15 but there are some exceptions for 14 year olds. I suggest you look at the programs websites and see if you’d qualify.

If you google programs like YFU, Rotary, ISE then it’ll show the websites and if you just look around a bit you can find the age requirements. This information is normally on the program information page. Hope this helps!

43 Quest International on Nov 2nd, 2011 said:

This article reflects exactly what we do at Quest International. Host Families and students are screened to make sure they fulfill different requirements. For example we check the host family’s backgrounds and understand what are their main motives behind hosting. We do the same for students by checking their English level, what they enjoy doing and understand their expectations. This is done to get the best match between students and host families.

Hello,
I was wondering if you could give me some websites about how to become an foreign exchange student? I’m in England and I want to go to South Korea, preferably Seoul but if not I don’t mind. I’m having a lot of trouble finding programmes that I can trust, including the Rotary program because to be honest I don’t see how that works raspberry I’m looking for perhaps short term as I’m 14 (I plan to go next year) and 15 in just over a months time and I have a lot of important exams.
Thank you!

45 Quest International on Nov 8th, 2011 said:

Hello Ellie,

Unfortunately, I am not sure who you can contact in England since Quest International is based in the U.S.  I can explain how we work though. For our American Students, we offer a semester or year abroad in many different countries located in Europe, Asia and South America. We make sure to screen properly the student and the host agency does the same for a host family that the student will be staying with. The host agency will make sure that the student will be placed in a good high school.
One suggestion I could give you is trying to get some information about an organism in England that identify, promote and support international youth exchange programs such as the CSIET.
You can check them out and contact them. They might be able to help you out.
Here is our Website for more information on how we work: www.questexchange.org
Here is the CSIET website:

I Hope this will help you!!
