Becoming an Exchange Student?

Question asked by Bryanna Mariñas on Jun 10th

Description:

First of all, I'm 12 years old and I live in the Philippines. I know it's a bit early, but I'm already starting to plan to become an exchange student. I've been researching everywhere and will be applying for a U.S. Visa. After everything I've read, I have a few questions:

1. I'm planning to go to the San Francisco in the U.S. because I have an aunt who can help me settle in there. What are the best schools there? Is it best to stay with my aunt or have a host family?

2. I've read quite the lot of articles and reviews. Some say it's a bad idea to stay in the U.S. If so, what are the better choices? Like Canada?

3. I'm incoming Grade 7 this month. When can I do the exchange? The K-12 System is new in my country. Is it better to do it after Grade 8 or during a gap year?

4. How early should I prepare for all these things? Do I start now or wait?

5. What Exchange Programs should I take? Any suggestions?

These are my questions so far though I'm certain I'll have more in the upcoming future. I'll really appreciate any answers. Thank you!

1. If you stay with your Aunt it is a direct placement, but most organizations will not let you stay with a relative. The organization that you will work with will find you a school. As long as it’s not a direct placement. A host family is going to give you the best experience to improve your English.            2. It’s not bad to stay in the U.S. It all matters on your attitude.  If you are open minded and have no expectations, you will do fine.
3. Exchange is 15 years old to 18. So 10th grade is usually the earliest. If you want the high school experience go before your gap year.  A lot of schools don’t take kids if they are done with school.
4. You can begin looking at prices and checking out scholarships.
5. There are many programs out there.  Your best bet is to talk to people who have done exchange.  The bigger the organization does not mean the better.

I'm sorry..
