Hi Mr. Peirano.  I’m preparing to go on an exchange to Japan next year.  I take Japanese language classes at a local place near me, but I did self study for a little while.  I would recommend you check out textfugu.com for an amazing online textbook.  It is always updated and gives you links to other resources (free) to go with the program.

If you want an old-fashioned paper textbook, I would recommend the Genki textbook.  That is what we use in my class, and I believe it is a really great textbook.

And while I believe this site to be great, might I recommend you check out culture-shocked.com?  They are very active and people post everyday.  They have information for parents, aspiring exchange students, exchange students already abroad, and returnees.  It is a forum.

I hope you get a chance to read this and it helps you.  Have a great day, and I hope your son gets to go on his exchange.

Sincerely, Joshua
